Ninth Triennial Gathering

Make plans now to attend the Ninth Triennial Gathering July 24-27, 2014, in Charlotte North Carolina. The theme is “of many generations,” and is taken from Isaiah 58:12. “Your ancient ruins shall be rebuilt; you shall raise up the foundations of many generations; you shall be called the repairer of the breach, the restorer of streets to live in.”

Earlybird registration starts September 16, 2013 and runs through January 6, 2014, and is $325. After January 6, registration is $350. Go online at welcatg.org to register. (This website won’t be open until September 16.) Registration materials will be sent to prior participants.

Look for the September “Northwester” for scholarship applications. There will be two $200 scholarships per conference. There will be a special scholarship, for a woman 40 and under who has never been to a convention, for the whole registration fee. A block of hotel rooms will be reserved for our Synod, and we should have that information by the end of September.

Featured speakers will be Susan Sparks and Becca Stevens. Susan Sparks, a lawyer, pastor and comedian, currently serves Madison Avenue Baptist Church in New York City. Sparks’ book “Laugh Your Way to Grace: Reclaiming the Power of Humor” was named one of the best spiritual books of 2010. Becca Stevens, an Episcopal priest serving as chaplain at St. Augustine’s at Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tenn., is founder of Magdalene and Thistle Farms, a community and social enterprise that stands with women recovering from violence, prostitution, addiction and life on the street. She has authored eight books and has been featured on NPR, PBS and CNN, and was named by the White House as one of 15 Champions of Change.
